This is the second article in the PPE Exam Questions series.  These articles are meant to help you with the PPE exam with very realistic exam questions.  This article not only covers the multiple choice style question, I have also added a short answer style question that is seen in the PEO Exams or PEO PPE.

QUESTION:

When asked to provide a reduced fee for a very similar design the Consulting Engineer should ?

a. Offer a substantial discount as minimal work is required.
b. Offer a small time saving discount, as the knowledge, qualifications and responsibility, remain the same.
c. Refuse the work as a potential for a conflict of interests exists.
d. Charge more for the work as the previous customer has tested the design.

ANSWER:

The most correct answer is to realize that the worth the Consulting Engineer provides is more than simply time.  In fact, the knowledge, qualifications and responsibility remain the same.  To charge more is also feasible; but less correct since no further value by the Engineer has been provided.  To offer a substantial discount is simply wrong and ignoring the Engineers duty to himself to be fairly compensated.

QUESTION:

a. Briefly define the practice of professional engineering

b. Professional engineering is described as a “self-regulating profession.” What does the term mean? In your answer, briefly describe three different features in the way professional engineering is regulated in your province that are consistent with this term.

ANSWER:

a. Your association states: “practice of professional engineering means any act of planning, designing, composing, evaluating, advising, reporting, directing or supervising that requires the application of engineering principles and concerns the safeguarding of life, health, property, economic interests, the public welfare or the environment, or the managing of any such act”

b. Self-Regulation of the profession means that the members of the association are responsible to regulate the practice of professional engineering.  The three features that PEO utilizes to regulate the profession are:
           (a) licensing as a means to ensure qualified practitioners
           (b) right to title as a means to identify the qualified to the public
           (c) discipline processes

I hope these questions help you prepare for the examination.  Best wishes with your studies.
