A staple in engineering textbooks, construction workers nicknamed the first Tacoma Narrows Bridge, "Galloping Gertie" during construction. Shortly after opening, Galloping Gertie, the 3rd longest suspension bridge in the world, fell 200 feet into the river below. Gertie took 3 cars down, but all of the occupants of the car escaped without harm.
